Original Girl Scout Cookies.
With a bit of a story. Juliette Gordon Low, the founder of Girls Scouts, was a southern girl, born in Savannah Georgia. Due to the Civil War, in which her father participated, her family had to move several times. Her dad was a cotton broker, and her mother was from one of the families that played a role in founding Chicago. During the war, they lived for a while in Chicago before returning to Savannah. She was a sickly and accident prone child, suffering malaria, many broken bones, and various other injuries and sicknesses. Called "Daisy" after her grandmother, she was dubbed "Crazy Daisy" by her family and friends, due to her eccentricities. Her cousin Caroline described her by saying, "While you never knew what she would do next, she always did what she made up her mind to do." She wrote poetry, stories, and painted, started a newspaper as a child, a club for girls, and acted in plays she wrote herself. When she was 26, she married William Low and lived in England. It was not a compatible marriage, and she was apparently unable to have children, so her life was filled with partridge hunting, nursing the sick, charity work, and various other activities her husband did not approve of. He began to drink and have affairs, did not support her, and eventually died in the process of divorcing her. He left her nothing when he died. Her family contested the will, and she eventually received her home and some securities. When she returned to the US, she started Girl Scouts based on the Boy Scouts that were active in England. She lived a very interesting life with all she did, and died of breast cancer when she was 66. Her first cookies were sold door to door in baskets carried by the Girl Scouts.
